Velo and SRAM Drive Carbon Fiber Recycling for Circular Economy

Posted date : 2025-05-04 22:37:01

As global environmental awareness rises, “circular economy” has become a key trend in industry development. Velo, a pioneer in sustainable design, has long been committed to resource reutilization, focusing on integrating circular economy practices at both internal and external levels. Internally, Velo emphasizes recycling, reusing, reducing waste, and redesigning, optimizing everything from material selection to production processes to minimize environmental impact.

In this context, Velo has partnered with SRAM, a globally renowned bicycle component brand, to implement the circular economy. SRAM’s ZIPP brand, known for producing high-performance carbon fiber components such as wheels, handlebars, stems, and seat posts, has been highly praised in the market. However, the issue of how to recycle the leftover carbon fiber material from the production process and retain its value has long been overlooked. While SRAM has developed a comprehensive carbon fiber recycling system, the challenge remains how to maximize the reuse of these materials, which is where this collaboration becomes essential.

With over 45 years of experience in the bicycle industry, Velo manufactures 12 million saddles annually and is actively exploring alternative materials to reduce carbon emissions. Through this collaboration, the two companies successfully combined recycled carbon fiber waste with nylon to create a high-performance bicycle saddle material, ensuring that the carbon fiber waste, which would other- wise lose its value, retains equal worth.

Additionally, with Velo and SRAM’s factories located less than 20 kilometers apart, the supply chain process and transportation costs have been significantly reduced, further lowering the carbon footprint of the product. This new material has passed Velo’s rigorous laboratory testing and verification, ensuring it meets production and performance requirements. It has now been successfully applied to high-end saddles.

Giant Raises U.S. Prices by 10%

Giant Raises U.S. Prices by 10% as Taiwanese Bike Makers Rush Shipments Before Tariff Hike

Text & Photos: Daphne Chen (Wheel Giant)

As of April 10, the U.S. has temporarily suspended reciprocal tariffs on Taiwanese imports and is instead imposing a 10% baseline tariff until July 9. With import costs expected to rise sharply after this deadline, many American importers are scrambling to place orders and replenish stock in hopes of reducing future costs. However, companies still sitting on high inventory levels are not in a hurry to restock during the 90-day grace period, and many players in the market are taking a wait-and-see approach.

Some Taiwanese bicycle manufacturers report that they are currently expediting shipments due to clear instructions from U.S. buyers: all goods must arrive at a U.S. port and clear customs before 12:01 AM EDT on July 9. If customs clearance is not completed in time, reciprocal tariffs—up to 32% for Taiwan—will be reinstated. Several component makers have received rush orders and are working overtime to meet the deadline. Below is a summary of the current situation based on Wheel Giant interviews with five Taiwanese assemblers:

Giant Group: No Rush Orders Yet, Risk Remains Manageable

Giant Group has not received urgent shipment requests from its U.S. clients, nor has it initiated any expedited production or exports. The company notes that the U.S. accounts for about 9% of its global revenue in 2024. With a well-diversified global market, the overall business risk remains under control. In response to Specialized and Trek announcing price hikes, Giant Group officially raised the retail prices of all models in the U.S. market by 10% starting May 1.

Merida: Tariff Costs Absorbed by Clients

Merida reports that the U.S. market contributes around 10% to its total revenue. Previously, U.S. import tariffs on its products were based on tire width—5.5% for road bikes (under 28mm) and 11% for wider models. Clients with existing inventory have asked to delay shipments, but since Merida mainly produces new bikes, only a small portion has been postponed. As Merida’s export pricing is based on FOB terms, the tariffs are borne by U.S. importers, who are currently absorbing the costs.

Ideal Bike: Accelerating Shipments, Tariff Costs on Clients

According to GM Chen, Ideal Bike exports around 25% of its Taiwan production to the U.S. market. Customers have requested faster deliveries before the end of the 90-day window. To meet the requirement that all goods must clear U.S. customs before July 9, Ideal is scheduling shipments for early June. The company uses FOB pricing, meaning the 10% tariff is the responsibility of the customers. While some clients are passing the cost on to consumers, others are trying to negotiate for price reductions. Discussions are still ongoing.

Axman: Full-Speed Production to Meet Deadline

Axman states that about 30% of its sales come from the U.S. market. American clients have insisted that orders must ship and clear customs before the July 9 deadline to avoid the 32% reciprocal tariff. To meet this deadline, customers are requesting shipments by the end of May. Axman is now working intensively to adjust its production schedule. Negotiations over the 10% baseline tariff are still underway.

Ming Cycle: Clients Absorbing 10% Tariff

Ming Cycle, which derives around 20% of its business from the U.S., reports that customers are urging the company to ship all orders that can be completed within the 90-day window. This proactive stocking aims to avoid the steep tariffs expected after July. The company says that its clients are currently absorbing the 10% baseline tariff themselves.

Trump Tariffs Hit US Bike Industry

Posted date : 2025-04-23 04:25:59

Text: Wheel Giant

On April 2, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the “Liberation Day Tariffs” policy, sending shockwaves through the global bicycle industry. Although the administration later introduced a 90-day grace period and reduced the tariff rate to 10% during this time—excluding China, which remains subject to higher duties—the global cycling sector remains on edge. In response, major U.S. brands have swiftly taken action, implementing price hikes, adjusting business strategies, and in some cases, even facing company closures.

Specialized Introduces Transparent Tariff Surcharge

Specialized was among the first to respond, informing retailers on April 9 that it would implement a 10% tariff surcharge as a separate line item on B2B invoices for its newly released Turbo Levo 4 e-MTBs, starting May 1. Orders shipped before that date will not be affected. The brand also announced that beginning in May, retail prices across its full lineup of bikes and equipment would increase accordingly. Specialized emphasized that by itemizing the tariff, consumers can clearly see the cost breakdown, marketing assets won't require updates, and the company retains the flexibility to adjust if government policies change.

Trek Implements Immediate Price Increases

Trek followed suit shortly after, notifying its dealer network on April 17 that immediate price increases would take effect across most Trek and Electra models. The company cited the need to address significant cost hikes driven by the new 10% tariff. In a strategic move to prevent retailers from stockpiling pre-tariff inventory, Trek also applied the increases to all backordered products. The company reassured dealers that while prices are rising, the value of their current inventory has appreciated, and future sales would generate higher gross profit margins.

Revel Bikes Shuts Down Amid Mounting Pressure

In contrast to the actions taken by industry giants like Specialized and Trek, Revel Bikes, a mountain bike brand based in Colorado, announced the closure of its operations on April 17, 2025. After struggling with significant financial challenges—product delays, mounting debt, and a weakened market post-COVID—Revel was unable to recover. The company has begun liquidating its assets and entered an orderly wind-down process, transferring control to the bank holding its senior debt. Revel's closure highlights the precarious financial landscape faced by smaller brands in the cycling industry, as many continue to grapple with the combined impact of rising tariffs and the lasting effects of the pandemic.

Industry at a Crossroads

While the new tariffs have been temporarily reduced to 10%, they are part of a broader strategy aimed at enforcing trade reciprocity. This move, however, is placing additional pressure on an industry already struggling with post-pandemic recovery, supply chain disruptions, and declining demand.

As major brands like Trek and Specialized adjust their pricing and operational strategies to navigate these challenges, smaller, more innovative companies may find it difficult to survive. What is clear, however, is that the cost of cycling is rising, and the U.S. bike market could look quite different in the months to come.  (Daphne Chen)

Trump's 32% Tariff and Taiwan's Bicycle Industry Response

Posted date : 2025-04-06 21:19:40

Text: Daphne Chen from Wheel Giant

On April 2, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an executive order called "Liberation Day" at the White House. The order states that the U.S. will impose a minimum 10% "baseline tariff" on all imported goods, and will apply up to 50% "reciprocal tariffs" on several trade deficit countries. Specifically, a 32% tariff will be imposed on Taiwanese goods, 34% on Chinese goods, with an expanded tariff measure targeting exports from the EU, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, and others. The baseline tariffs were officially implemented on April 5.

Global Market Response

This move triggered significant global market fluctuations. Major U.S. stock indexes plummeted, with the S&P 500 falling 6%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 5.5%, and the Nasdaq slipping 5.8%. Stock markets in other countries were also affected, with Germany's DAX index falling over 5%, the UK's FTSE 100 down nearly 4%, and France's CAC 40 suffering similar losses.

According to some media analysis, "Trump's tariff policy is a global storm. Tariffs are set at 50% for Lesotho, 49% for Cambodia, 46% for Vietnam, but only 20% for the EU, and 10% for the UK and Singapore. This seemingly asymmetric tariff distribution hides Trump's hidden calculation: focusing on service trade to protect America's global service industry advantage while pressuring the return of manufacturing to the U.S. Trump's tariff logic is not purely trade protectionism but a strategy prioritizing service trade."

Impact on Taiwan's Bicycle Industry

For Taiwan, Trump's tariff policy presents a direct impact. Taiwan's bicycle industry has production bases in China and several Southeast Asian countries, where tariff rates are generally higher than in Taiwan. The following are the new tariff rates for key countries and regions as provided by the Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA):

Taiwan: Regular bicycle tariff 42%, electric bicycle tariff 32%

Vietnam: Regular bicycle tariff 57%, electric bicycle tariff 46%

Cambodia: Regular bicycle tariff 60%, electric bicycle tariff 49%

China: Regular bicycle tariff 11+25+10+10+34=90% (with the potential addition of a 25% Venezuelan oil penalty tariff, this could rise to 115%); electric bicycle tariff 0+25+10+10+34=79% (with the same Venezuelan oil penalty tariff, this could rise to 104%)

Indonesia: Regular bicycle tariff 43%, electric bicycle tariff 32%

EU: Regular bicycle tariff 31%, electric bicycle tariff 20%

Philippines: Regular bicycle tariff 28%, electric bicycle tariff 17%

UK, Brazil, Turkey, Argentina: Regular bicycle tariff 21%, electric bicycle tariff 10%

Trump's "reciprocal tariffs" policy is expected to significantly reshape global trade patterns, potentially leading to a new wave of production relocations. Industry players will need to closely monitor policy changes and adjust supply chain strategies accordingly. At the same time, through technological innovation and upgrading, companies can increase product value and enhance market competitiveness.

Taiwan Government's Five Key Response Strategies

In response to the U.S.'s 32% high reciprocal tariff on Taiwanese goods, President Lai Ching-te has outlined five key strategies to mitigate the impact on Taiwan's economy and strengthen economic cooperation with the U.S. and other countries:

1. Negotiation to Improve Tariffs: A negotiation team has been established to discuss tariff reductions with the U.S., expand procurement, and increase investments in the U.S. Additionally, efforts will be made to address non-tariff trade barriers and high-tech product export controls.

2. Industry Support Plan: Immediate support and assistance will be provided to affected industries, particularly traditional industries and SMEs, to help with transformation and upgrading.

3. Medium- and Long-term Economic Development Plan: Cooperation with allied countries will focus on opening up new markets and strengthening the integration of industry supply chains. Taiwan's strengths in semiconductor manufacturing, ICT, and other sectors will be leveraged to promote smart manufacturing and AI industry development.

4. Taiwan +1: Taiwan will focus on strengthening its investment environment, encouraging more investments in Taiwan, and enhancing industrial cooperation with the U.S.

5. Industry Listening Tour: The government will closely cooperate with the industry to listen to their concerns, adjust policies in line with industry needs, and ensure that strategies are more targeted.

President Lai emphasized that Taiwan has strong economic resilience and, with appropriate responses and collaboration, Taiwan can overcome this challenge and achieve continued economic growth.

TBA’s "Fortune Seeking and Disaster Avoidance" Strategies

TBA Chairman Robert Wu urged the government to actively consider tax reductions to create negotiation space with the U.S. and reduce the impact of tariffs. According to estimates, the new tariffs will reflect in the end-consumer market within 3 to 6 months, with significant price increases and sales slowdowns expected by the third quarter. Wu pointed out that the bicycle industry had originally expected the market to gradually recover in 2025, but the U.S. tariff policy has significantly altered this outlook. In the short term, some orders may return to Taiwan due to tariff differences, but as the tariff impacts on the end market gradually emerge, the market may face slower consumption and order adjustments. In the long run, the industry may face the risk of shifting orders to low-tariff regions.

Robert Wu has proposed two major strategies, "Fortune Seeking and Disaster Avoidance," to respond to this challenge: first, by enhancing product competitiveness and brand image to enter the mid-to-high-end U.S. market, particularly for electric bicycles and smart products; second, by actively expanding into the EU and other emerging markets to diversify risks and reduce dependency on a single market. Furthermore, Wu strongly recommends that the government take the initiative to signal potential tax cuts, creating room for negotiations with the U.S. and reducing the long-term risks of tariff barriers.

TBA calls for the cooperation of industry, government, academia, and research institutions to create a "sustainable, high-quality, cross-regional resilient supply chain." Overall, TBA believes that as long as there is industry cooperation and clear strategies, Taiwan still possesses excellent brand value, product reliability, and innovation capabilities, and can undergo a stable transformation amidst global changes. This tariff change is seen as an opportunity for Taiwan's bicycle industry to transform. Robert Wu emphasized that by enhancing industry competitiveness, supply chain resilience, and integrating global resources, Taiwan's bicycle industry still has the chance to make a successful transformation and maintain its brand value and innovation capabilities in the global market.

TBA Chairman Robert Wu urges: "We are all in this together—let's unite our strength and efforts to enhance industry competitiveness, supply chain resilience, and integrate global resources."

Merida released its financial results for fiscal year 2024, reporting a loss of NT$2.34 per share. Despite this setback, the company has decided to distribute a cash dividend of NT$4.0 per share from its retained earnings.

The company held its Board of Directors meeting on March 13, 2025, to approve the financial statements. Merida’s core business saw a stable gross margin, with revenue reaching NT$29.63 billion, an 8.7% increase compared to the previous year. Operating profit stood at NT$3.03 billion. However, Merida experienced significant non-operating losses due to one-time impairments, including a deferred income tax asset write-down and goodwill impairments related to its retail operations. These non-operating losses exceeded operating profits, resulting in a consolidated pre-tax loss of NT$732.66 million and a post-tax loss of NT$766.17 million.

Although the company faced a net loss, it remains confident in the outlook for the bicycle market, particularly in light of strong growth in China. Since the non-operating losses did not involve cash outflows, Merida has opted to reward its shareholders with a cash dividend. The dividend proposal is expected to be presented for approval at the Annual Shareholder Meeting on June 25, 2025.

In 2024, Merida’s performance in the U.S. and European markets was challenged by a destocking phase, with high inventory levels and increased pricing pressure. In contrast, Merida saw substantial sales growth in the Chinese bicycle market, helping offset declines in other regions. While the company’s equity-method investee also showed improvement, it faced non-operating losses due to impairments, contributing to the overall loss for the year.

Merida emphasized that nearly half of the non-operating losses were related to non-cash adjustments, such as the write-down of deferred income tax assets. These adjustments do not impact the company's long-term growth prospects. The investee company remains financially healthy, with stable revenues, growing margins, and a solid financial position, making it well-positioned for future growth.

Looking ahead to 2025, Merida sees signs of recovery in both the U.S. and European markets. The company’s revenues for January and February showed significant growth, up 59% and 38%, respectively, fueling optimism for continued progress this year. With strong operational performance and a promising market outlook, Merida remains confident in the long-term potential of the bicycle industry.

Giant Group's Board of Directors approved the company's 2024 financial results on March 14. The group reported consolidated revenue of NT$71.28 billion, a 7.4% decrease compared to the previous year. The decline in revenue was primarily attributed to increased inventory age and significant sales discounts, which led to a NT$1.9 billion inventory impairment loss, affecting the company's gross margin. As a result, the gross margin for 2024 dropped to 19.0%, down from 22.1% in 2023. Excluding the impact of the inventory impairment, the gross margin would have remained at 21.7%.

Although operating expenses slightly decreased alongside the revenue decline, the expense ratio rose to 16.4%, up from 15.9% in 2023, leading to a 60% drop in operating profit. Net income after tax also fell by 62.8% year-on-year to NT$1.26 billion, with earnings per share (EPS) of NT$3.22.

The Board also approved a proposal for a cash dividend of NT$2.2 per share, which will be subject to approval at the Annual Shareholder Meeting, scheduled for June 23, 2025.

For the fourth quarter of 2024, Giant Group's consolidated revenue amounted to NT$13.59 billion, an 8.5% decrease from the same period in 2023. The decline was driven by discount clearance in the U.S. and European markets, as well as slower sales in China, compounded by additional inventory impairment losses. The gross margin for Q4 dropped to 13.5%, and excluding the impact of the inventory impairment, the gross margin would have been 18%. With the decline in gross margin exceeding the reduction in operating expenses, the company reported an operating loss of NT$1.04 billion for the quarter. Net loss after tax for Q4 was NT$910 million, resulting in a net loss per share of NT$2.32.

Trump to Impose Additional 10% Tariff on China

President Donald Trump announced that starting March 4, tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will go into effect, and China will face an additional 10% tariff on the same date. This will bring the total U.S. tariff on Chinese imports to 20%.

According to CNBC, the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which had been paused for a month starting February 3, were expected to be reinstated. Trump clarified this in a Truth Social post, stating that the tariffs would take effect as scheduled. He cited the ongoing issue of illegal drug trafficking from Mexico and Canada as the reason for the tariffs, despite both countries' pledges to enhance border control efforts.

In addition to the tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, Trump also plans to impose global 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, effective March 12. On February 13, he signed a memorandum to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that levy duties on U.S. imports, targeting other unfair trade practices such as value-added taxes.

Trump emphasized that tariffs remain a key part of his second-term agenda, serving both as a revenue source and leverage in trade negotiations.

UK Lifts Anti-Dumping Tariffs on Non-Folding E-Bikes from China

UK Lifts Anti-Dumping and Countervailing Tariffs on Non-Folding E-Bikes from China

Text: Wheel Giant

On February 6, 2025, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade accepted the recommendation from the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) and announced the removal of anti-dumping and countervailing measures on non-folding e-bikes imported from China, effective February 7, 2025. According to statistics, non-folding e-bikes account for about 95% of the UK’s e-bike market. The TRA concluded that maintaining punitive tariffs on Chinese bicycles "was not in the UK’s economic interests," marking this policy change as a significant milestone.

The UK has also removed the double-tariff system for non-folding e-bikes, while folding e-bikes with tariff numbers 8711601000 and 8711609010 will remain subject to the original tariff rates, which range from 10.3% to 70.1% for anti-dumping duties and 3.9% to 17.2% for countervailing duties. The new policy is valid from February 7, 2025, to January 18, 2029. TRA has indicated that they will notify industry stakeholders about the expiration date for these measures, allowing parties to apply for a review extension. The TRA also emphasized that removing these tariffs would save costs for both consumers and importers, with consumers saving an average of £200 per e-bike.

UK e-bike manufacturers were shocked by this decision and expressed dissatisfaction, fearing that it would harm the UK’s domestic bicycle industry. They are concerned that the move will lead to a surge of low-priced Chinese e-bikes flooding the UK market, putting pressure on local manufacturers.

In response, the UK government stated that protecting the UK bicycle industry from unfair competition is important, and that it will take action to combat unsafe e-bikes.

The European Bicycle Manufacturers Association (EBMA) expressed regret over the UK's decision and stated that they will closely monitor the potential risk of circumvention arising from this decision to ensure that the European market is not affected by subsidized e-bikes from China. EBMA emphasized that this decision does not impact the EU's anti-dumping and countervailing measures. The EBMA also pointed out that, under the UK's post-Brexit trade policy, the UK’s trade policies have become independent of the EU, meaning that this policy change in the UK will not affect the EU's anti-dumping and countervailing measures.

In 2024, Taiwan's bicycle industry continued to struggle, following the downturn seen in 2023. According to customs data, the total export volume for bicycles was just 909,800 units, marking a 36% year-on-year decrease and officially falling below the 1 million-unit threshold, a significant warning signal for Taiwan’s bicycle sector. The total export value reached $1.028 billion, down 25.68% from the previous year, while the average export price increased by 8.19%, reaching $1,130.79 per unit. Demand in the two major export markets, the European Union and the United States, remained weak, with the number of bicycles imported from Taiwan declining by 30.28% and 33.27%, respectively, in 2024.

In the electric bicycle segment, Taiwan's export volume totaled only 363,000 units, a 47% decrease compared to 2023, with the export value dropping by 44.6% to $672 million. However, the average export price for e-bikes reached a new high of $1,847.56, growing by 4.55% year-on-year. Additionally, the export volume and value of Taiwan's bicycle parts decreased by 13.61% and 17.46%, respectively, compared to 2023.

In December 2024, Merida reported revenue of NT$1.797 billion, a 17.6% increase year-on-year, bringing its total revenue for the year to NT$29.647 billion, a 9.1% growth from 2023. Merida’s December shipments totaled 43,000 units, with traditional bicycle shipments falling by 38%, while electric bike shipments grew by 28% to approximately 14,000 units.

Giant’s December 2024 revenue reached NT$4.11 billion, a slight decrease of 1.43% year-on-year, with total 2024 revenue amounting to NT$71.255 billion, down 7.4% from 2023. Looking ahead to 2025, Giant expects growth in the three major markets—Europe, the U.S., and China—while Merida anticipates growth in Europe and the U.S., as inventory levels have significantly decreased and are expected to improve in the new year.

EU Extends Anti-Dumping Measures on Chinese E-Bikes

LEVA-EU Calls for Market Surveillance

Text: Wheel Giant Inc.

The European Commission has decided to extend anti-dumping and countervailing duties on electric bicycles (e-bikes) imported from China for another five years. This decision follows an expiry review investigation and is in line with expectations. The remaining imports from China mostly consist of extremely low-cost e-bikes, prompting LEVA-EU to call for enhanced market surveillance.

The Commission extended the measures based on three main reasons:

Ongoing Subsidies: Chinese manufacturers continue to benefit from substantial government subsidies, creating unfair competition within the EU market.

Risk of Recurrence: Removing the duties could lead to a resurgence of harm to the EU e-bike industry, as low-priced, subsidized imports may threaten local production and employment.

EU Strategic Interests: Retaining the measures aligns with the EU’s broader economic goals, including promoting innovation and sustainable transportation.

However, LEVA-EU argues that current trade measures inadvertently facilitate the entry of non-compliant, low-cost e-bikes that fail to meet EU technical standards, posing safety risks. LEVA-EU also highlights issues with component duties that complicate the production of e-bikes in Europe, urging the EU to remove these barriers to foster growth and innovation.

Annick Roetynck, Managing Director of LEVA-EU, emphasized: "Robust market surveillance, not trade defense, is the only sustainable way forward. By addressing these critical issues, the EU can support a thriving and competitive electric cycle industry while ensuring safety and compliance for consumers."

The bicycle industry is grappling with significant challenges, primarily due to high inventory levels. Rising demand during the pandemic led brands and suppliers to ramp up procurement, resulting in supply chain backlogs. While discount promotions have helped clear stock, profitability has suffered, adding financial pressure on brands. Many startups have struggled or shut down due to lack of funding, while traditional brands are fighting to survive. Some have defaulted on payments or passed losses onto suppliers, further straining the supply chain, which could reach a breaking point by 2025.

According to Astro Tech’s General Manager, Samuel Hu, price wars driven by consumer demand for discounts have further eroded profit margins. The situation is compounded by geopolitical tensions and fluctuating trade policies, especially in critical manufacturing hubs like Vietnam. The DJSI, launched in 1999 by S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM, evaluates companies' sustainability efforts in three key areas: environment, social, and governance (ESG). Only the top 10% of companies in each sector are selected for inclusion. Giant's selection demonstrates its leadership in global ESG strategy and execution.

In recent years, Giant has embraced the "Cycling for a Better Future" philosophy, promoting low-carbon living, value recycling, and inclusivity through innovative ESG strategies. The company has also introduced a range of products using sustainable materials, with the marketing slogan "A Trail to Zero," reflecting its commitment to positive transformation and value reshaping. Giant will continue to expand its ESG impact, setting a new standard for sustainability in the global bicycle industry.

From January to October 2024, Taiwan's cumulative bicycle exports reached 750,000 units, marking a 36% decline compared to the same period in 2023. The export value also dropped by 28.4%, with the average export price increasing by 11.87% to USD 1,146. Among these exports, 211,000 units were shipped to the European Union, a decrease of 38.24% from the previous year, while exports to the United States amounted to 250,000 units, reflecting a 37.65% decline.

In terms of electric bicycles, Taiwan exported 305,000 units from January to October 2024, a 50% drop compared to the same period in 2023. The export value fell by 41.22%, and the average export price rose by 7.58% to USD 1,862. Electric bicycle exports to the European Union totaled 159,000 units, down 56.89%, while exports to the United States reached 84,000 units, a decline of 31.73%.

Grace Ruan, a senior bicycle media professional in Taiwan, pointed out that from the export statistics, the European and American markets have yet to show a clear recovery. Despite a decrease in inventory days, the pace of inventory turnover still lags behind expectations. The market is expected to need more time to digest existing stock, and industry experts predict that it may take until the third quarter of 2025, with some models potentially needing to wait until the end of 2025. During this period, Taiwanese bicycle manufacturers are actively adjusting inventory, production, and strictly managing financial risks. They are also fully committed to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) carbon reduction and sustainability initiatives to strengthen their competitiveness once inventory is cleared.

Looking ahead to 2025, global economic challenges persist. Robert Wu, Chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Association, proposed the development of a "Sustainable, Lean, Cross-Regional Resilient Supply Chain" and emphasized the shift from MIT (Made in Taiwan) to MBT (Made by Taiwan) and MWT (Made with Taiwan). He encouraged Taiwanese manufacturers to enhance their overseas operations and divisions of labor, striving to become global resource integrators and achieve the goal of "Taiwan Inside."

Tern and its partners have donated 60 Short Haul cargo bikes to support communities affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These bikes are being distributed in cities like Chernihiv and Oleksandriya, providing essential transportation for families, aid workers, and local service providers. The rugged, muscle-powered bikes are crucial in areas where infrastructure has been damaged, offering a reliable alternative to automobiles.

In Chernihiv, which faced heavy bombardment, the bikes assist families with children, healthcare workers, and those rebuilding their homes. The bikes also support delivery services, such as bread distribution to hospitals and schools. In Oleksandriya, a humanitarian center uses the bikes to supply refugees.

The initiative is especially meaningful as it was championed by Thomas Loesch, a beloved member of the Tern design team who passed away in August. His perseverance ensured the project’s success, bringing hope and practical support to Ukrainians enduring the war's challenges. The bikes aim to empower essential workers and provide moments of respite for local families.

Taichung Promotes Carbon-Free Tourism with Cycling Initiatives

TAICHUNG, TAIWAN — As Taiwan’s cycling industry hub, Taichung is taking significant strides in integrating its robust bicycle manufacturing sector with tourism, creating unique cycling experiences to attract both domestic and international travelers. By focusing on sustainable, low-carbon tourism, the city aims to offer a new "slow travel" experience, combining scenic beauty, healthy activity, and environmental responsibility.

With the longest and most extensive network of cycling paths in Taiwan, Taichung is home to over 780 kilometers of dedicated bike lanes — the longest in the six metropolitan areas of the country. To put it in perspective, this is nearly the equivalent of cycling the entire circumference of Taiwan’s 939.5 km Circum-Bike Route. Additionally, the city's convenient public bike rental system, YouBike, makes cycling easy for both locals and visitors, integrating cycling into the daily life of Taichung residents.

Taichung is further enhancing its cycling tourism by developing bike routes that connect various attractions around the city. Among the most popular routes is the "Houfeng Bicycle Trail," a scenic route converted from the old mountain railway. The 14-kilometer trail offers riders a chance to explore historical landmarks such as the Jiuxian Tunnel and the Hua-Liang Steel Bridge, while also enjoying a nostalgic atmosphere. Another well-loved path, the "Tanya Shen Greenway," is renowned for its flat, smooth trails surrounded by lush greenery, making it an ideal choice for families.

In response to the global climate crisis and the growing demand for sustainable travel, Taichung is positioning itself as a leader in promoting carbon-free tourism. The city government, in collaboration with the Taichung Industrial Story Museum Association, is planning a new initiative called the “Cycling Story Tour to 100 Venues.” This innovative event aims to link 32 industrial story museums, as well as nearby restaurants, attractions, and shops, to encourage visitors to explore the city by bicycle. The goal is to make Taichung the first city in Taiwan to champion carbon-free travel, offering a cleaner, healthier way to explore the island's vibrant culture and natural beauty.

Taichung’s efforts reflect its commitment to blending sustainability with tourism, while simultaneously promoting cycling as a fun and eco-friendly way to experience the city. With its picturesque routes and growing emphasis on green travel, Taichung is setting a new standard for the future of tourism in Taiwan.

2024 Taichung Bike Week: Industry Shows Resilience Amid Market Challenges

Text & Photos: Daphne Chen@Wheel Giant

2024 Taichung Bike Week (TBW) took place from September 24-27 at the Evergreen, Splendor, and Tempus hotels, featuring nearly 360 exhibitors, a slight increase from last year. However, many exhibitors reported that international buyers’ attendance was low, with most visits concentrated in the first two days. The foot traffic in the final two days was less impressive.

While the market is gradually recovering, Giant CEO Young Liu stated, "The worst is behind us for the bicycle industry." Some parts and accessories suppliers also mentioned receiving urgent orders, though in limited quantities, and customers have begun discussing new products. It’s been two years since new bikes were released, but inventory levels in European and American markets have not reduced as expected. Currently, there is still a significant amount of stock in the market, resulting in limited visibility for new orders.

Many industry players predict that a full recovery may not happen until next year, with OEM market recovery potentially delayed until 2026. Despite these challenges, bicycle manufacturers continue to innovate, showcasing various new products at Taichung Bike Week to capture buyers' attention.

While awaiting a market rebound, Taiwanese bicycle companies are actively conducting carbon audits in their factories, striving to reduce carbon emissions, optimize management, and implement ESG principles to build sustainable and high-quality enterprises.

The dates for the 2025 Taichung Bike Week have been set for September 16-19.

This event, attended by government officials and local dignitaries, highlights SRAM’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its presence in the region.

Construction of the facility began in August 2023, following extensive discussions with landowners, construction teams, and government authorities. Land leveling and excavation are now underway, marking a smooth start to the project. To showcase its progress, SRAM hosts a special event during Taichung Bike Week, where visitors can explore architectural models and videos that detail the new facility’s development.

Set to be completed within 24 months, the STC facility will consolidate SRAM’s three existing manufacturing plants, warehouse, and development center in Taiwan. This integration will further bolster Taiwan’s role in the global bicycle supply chain, enhance SRAM’s production capabilities, and drive substantial growth in central Taiwan.

SRAM Asia GM Bob Chen noted that all of SRAM's component production will take place at the new facility, which will also include chain production. Every product listed in SRAM's catalog will be available and purchasable at the new Taiwan facility. A grand opening ceremony is expected to be held in late 2026 or early 2027.

Giant Group Acquires U.S. Indoor Cycling Brand Stages

Giant Group announced that on September 14, it successfully acquired the assets of U.S. indoor cycling brand Stages Cycling through its American subsidiary, SPIA Cycling Inc., via bankruptcy proceedings. The winning bid amounted to $20.1 million, and the transaction has been completed. Giant stated that the primary goal of the acquisition is to expand its presence in the indoor cycling sector and build a comprehensive cycling ecosystem.

Stages is well known for its indoor bikes and power meters, and it is a leading brand in the U.S. commercial indoor cycling market, with many chain gyms as its clients. Stages' outdoor cycling products, including power meters and cycling computers, are also popular with regular cyclists. However, due to the decline in the indoor fitness market during the pandemic, coupled with U.S. inflation and rising interest rates, Stages’ business suffered significantly. This led the company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June this year. Giant Group hopes that through this acquisition, the strengths of both companies can be integrated to provide consumers with a more comprehensive cycling experience.

Giant Group CEO Young Liu expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating, "We are thrilled to integrate Stages' assets into the Giant Group. By combining indoor and outdoor cycling, we aim to provide outdoor riders with a full indoor training experience while bringing indoor fitness enthusiasts outdoors to enjoy the thrill of outdoor cycling. This will create the ultimate cycling ecosystem, offering a complete experience. We are confident in the future operations post-acquisition and will continue to deliver the best products and services to Stages customers."

Bosch eBike Systems Celebrates 15 Years

Posted date : 2024-08-28 19:20:51

An Exclusive Interview with CEO Claus Fleischer

Text & Photos: Daphne Chen

At Eurobike 2024 in Frankfurt, Wheel Giant had the privilege of interviewing Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike Systems, as the company celebrated its 15th anniversary. Fleischer reflected on Bosch’s impressive journey, marked by technological advancements, a commitment to sustainability, and a vision for the future.

Bosch eBike Systems was founded in 2009 as a start-up within the Bosch group and launched its first product in 2011. “Since then, we have brought numerous innovations to the e-bike market," Fleischer shared enthusiastically. One significant milestone came in 2014 with the introduction of the Performance Line and Active Line systems, providing riders with 50Nm and 60Nm of torque, respectively, while being compatible with various hubs and derailleurs. In 2015, Bosch introduced the famed eShift electronic shifting system, enhancing both safety and comfort for cyclists.

Another groundbreaking achievement came with Bosch’s push into connectivity and smart systems. Fleischer highlighted the launch of the Nyon smart display, which integrates with an app to offer various features, and the introduction of ABS (anti-lock braking system) in 2018. “This year, our focus is on innovations like eShift, new riding modes, and features such as Range Control,” he added.

Expanding eShift Partnerships

Bosch’s eShift was first integrated into its Smart System last year with support from internal gear suppliers like Enviolo, Rohloff, and 3X3. This year, the company expanded its strategic partnerships, notably teaming up with Taiwan’s TRP (Tektro) to introduce the TRP E.A.S.I. A12 wireless automatic shifting system, designed specifically for e-MTB and e-Gravel bikes. eShift now automatically adjusts gears based on the rider's preset cadence, enhancing the riding experience. In addition to TRP, Bosch’s eShift now supports Shimano’s Nexus Di2 and Cues Di2 systems.

Connectivity Leading the Way

Bosch continues to lead the market in connected biking solutions. This year, they introduced the Eco+ riding mode, designed for seamless transitions between assisted and unassisted riding. By adding this mode to the eBike Flow app, riders can personalize their e-bike’s performance to suit their preferences. Bosch also integrated AI into its Range Control feature, which predicts battery consumption and estimates the remaining battery percentage upon reaching a destination.

“The eBike Flow app has become a key milestone in the future of connected biking,” Fleischer said, emphasizing that the software connects all components, including the drive unit, battery, display, phone, and the rider, allowing for data sharing and interaction. With over one million users worldwide, the app provides personalized settings, navigation, and enhanced security features such as “eBike Lock” and “eBike Alarm” to protect against theft. The smart system also improves navigation through AI-based route planning and real-time battery management.

Commitment to Sustainability and the Circular Economy

Sustainability is a central pillar of Bosch’s strategy moving forward. Fleischer outlined three key sustainability goals: reducing carbon footprints, collaborating with suppliers to achieve carbon reductions, and advancing the circular economy. While cycling is already a sustainable mode of transport due to its low energy requirements and reduced CO2 emissions, Bosch is committed to further reducing the carbon footprint of its products throughout their lifecycle. This includes selecting eco-friendly materials, using green energy for production, and ensuring the recycling and refurbishment of e-bike components, particularly batteries. Bosch has established collection and recycling systems across Europe to manage used batteries responsibly.

Looking ahead, Fleischer affirmed Bosch’s dedication to sustainability and its ongoing use of AI and digital technologies to make products safer, smarter, and more user-friendly. As Bosch eBike Systems moves into its next 15 years, the company’s focus remains on pushing the boundaries of innovation while making the world a cleaner and greener place.

The world’s largest international bicycle exhibition, the 2024 Eurobike Show, took place from July 3rd to 7th in Frankfurt, Germany. This year’s event coincided with the fervor of the UEFA European Championship, a clash that saw football's excitement overshadowing the cycling world. Nonetheless, Eurobike 2024 remained a pivotal event, setting the trends and directions for the future of bicycles.

E-Mobility Takes Center Stage

This year’s Eurobike was unmistakably an e-mobility showcase. The exhibition floor was dominated by e-bikes and e-cargo bikes, emphasizing lightweight designs, smart IoT integration, higher torque, longer battery life, smart navigation, anti-theft features, and belt drives. The competition among motor manufacturers was fierce, with notable entries from DJI, known for drones, and ZF, a renowned automotive drivetrain manufacturer. The trend towards more compact and lightweight mid-drive motors with greater torque was evident.

Sustainability and Regulations in Focus

The upcoming implementation of the European Union's battery passport, production history, and related regulations garnered significant attention. The overarching themes of carbon reduction, eco-friendly materials, sustainable practices, and circular economy were prominently highlighted. Increasingly, products showcased at the event featured eco-friendly aluminum, recycled fishing nets, and green energy to minimize carbon emissions, aligning with the goals of circular economy and carbon neutrality.

Advancements in Technology and Materials

The pursuit of lightweight bicycles continued to be a significant focus, with 3D printing technology being increasingly utilized for parts, accessories, and even titanium frames, particularly in saddle products. This technological advancement is expected to revolutionize the manufacturing processes within the industry.

Event Scale and Market Insights

The 2024 Eurobike Show saw participation from 1,800 exhibitors representing 69 countries, with an indoor and outdoor exhibition area spanning 150,000 square meters. Despite the grand scale, exhibitors noted a 30-50% reduction in buyer attendance due to high bicycle inventory levels in the European market. The consumer turnout during the last two days, designated as consumer days, was also lower than expected. Industry experts anticipate that inventory levels may normalize by the end of this year, with some suggesting it could take until the first or even the second quarter of next year.

Looking Ahead

Despite the sentiment among many exhibitors that a four-day event would be more optimal, the 2025 Eurobike Show is scheduled to maintain its five-day duration from June 25th to 29th. As Eurobike continues to evolve, it remains at the forefront of defining and driving the future trends in the cycling industry.

The LMT Battery Passport Platform and EU Compliance

Aligning with Advanced Standards: The LMT Battery Passport Platform and EU Compliance

The year 2023 marked a significant downturn for Taiwan's bicycle industry, primarily due to overstocking by European and American clients during the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to a year-long effort to clear excess inventory. Taiwanese e-bike exports in 2023 plummeted to 686,500 units, representing a 33.74% decrease from 2022. Traditional bicycle exports also declined sharply from nearly 2 million units to 1.32 million, while related parts exports saw a 40% reduction.

Since 2019, the European market has experienced a notable shift, with traditional bicycle sales declining significantly while e-bike sales continuing to grow. In the U.S. market, data suggests that it was the first to face supply surpluses and downturns following the pandemic-driven demand surge. However, it is also expected to be the first market to recover from inventory pressures. Inventory levels in the U.S. decreased from a 12-month supply in December 2022 to 10.7 months in January 2023, approaching the normal level of around six months.

Facing simultaneous declines in bicycle, e-bike, and parts exports, Taiwan's bicycle industry is under significant pressure. To address these challenges, the Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA) is actively promoting six transformative platforms. The TBA’s future goals include "transitioning to a new future," "creating a new ecosystem," "exploring new business opportunities," and "jointly achieving new sustainability." As market inventories eventually deplete, the critical question remains: Will the industry be ready when demand rebounds?

E-bikes have become a dominant product in the global market, accompanied by increasingly stringent regulations. On August 17, 2023, the European Union announced the new Batteries Regulation, which took effect on February 18, 2024. This comprehensive law covers the entire lifecycle of battery products, from procurement and manufacturing to use and recycling, with detailed specifications for each stage.

The regulation mandates that batteries be removable, recyclable, properly labeled, and subject to due diligence. Starting in 2026, electric vehicles, light transport vehicles, and rechargeable industrial batteries exported to Europe must bear compliant battery labels. By 2027, the introduction of the battery passport system, complete with QR codes, will require disclosure of the carbon footprint across all lifecycle stages of batteries.

As a key player in the global mid-to-high-end bicycle industry, Taiwan must proactively adapt to these evolving EU regulations. The Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA), in collaboration with the Cycling & Health Tech Industry R&D Center (CHC), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and relevant public sectors, is spearheading the development of a Light Means of Transport (LMT) battery passport platform. This initiative includes efforts to construct a 'public cloud' infrastructure, emphasizing its impartial stance and ensuring fairness for all stakeholders in the industry.

This initiative aims to unify industry consensus and encourage early participation. The platform will ensure comprehensive lifecycle records for LMT batteries, encompassing production carbon emissions, distribution management, maintenance, warranty, and recycling tracking. These efforts are geared towards meeting future international battery regulatory requirements.

Furthermore, the TBA and CHC are engaging with industry stakeholders to refine the operational and service models of the battery passport platform. Discussions focus on critical aspects such as platform architecture, data access protocols, cybersecurity measures, and long-term maintenance strategies. The goal is to develop a feasible mechanism that garners widespread industry support, positioning Taiwan's bicycle industry at the forefront of regulatory compliance and sustainable innovation.

While navigating these challenges, Taiwan's bicycle industry remains committed to sustainable growth and innovation. The sector is positioning itself strategically for future opportunities within evolving regulatory landscapes. As the industry actively responds to new regulations, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and sustainable development continue to be its paramount missions and challenges.

The global bicycle industry acknowledges a fundamental truth: We have only one Earth, no Plan B, and no Planet B. This reality underscores our collective responsibility to join hands in protecting our irreplaceable planet. By embracing this fact, we commit to ensuring a sustainable future not just for our industry, but for the world at large.

Legislation S.7760-A/A.8102-A: Mandates a red tag on charging cords of micromobility devices, mopeds, and e-bikes to indicate unplugging when not in use.

Legislation S.7744-D/A.8310-C: Requires retailers to affix a notice on e-bikes and micromobility devices, stating to always yield to pedestrians and follow traffic laws, with penalties for non-compliance.

"As the use of these batteries continues to grow, so does the potential for more fires caused by them," said Jackie Bray, Commissioner of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. "New York State Fire has trained nearly 5,000 firefighters statewide on lithium-ion battery emergencies, and we will continue to expand these educational tools that will save lives and property."

In February, Governor Hochul announced the start of a safety campaign to raise awareness of consumer products that use lithium-ion batteries. The campaign includes display, search, and social media ads directed to consumers purchasing lithium-ion battery-powered items like e-bikes and e-scooters.

Key Tariff Exclusions on E-Bikes to Expire June 14

Posted date : 2024-05-28 04:41:12

Starting June 14, importers of Chinese-made e-bikes, juvenile bikes, and certain other bicycle products will face an additional 25% tariff. The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced on Friday that the exclusions from the Section 301 tariffs, initially imposed by the Trump administration and extended multiple times, will expire on this date.

Originally set to expire on May 31, the USTR has provided a transition period by extending the exclusions until June 14. After this period, imports of e-bikes, children's bikes, certain carbon fiber frames, and water packs will be subject to the extra 25% duty, in addition to existing tariffs. This additional tariff will apply to products arriving at Customs after midnight on June 14; products already cleared will not be affected.

However, the USTR has extended exclusions for Chinese-made bicycle trailers and some bicycle helmets until June 1, 2025, as detailed in Annex C of the USTR announcement.

PeopleforBikes, an advocacy group, stated that it continues to push for tariff relief and seeks clarity on recent USTR decisions. The exclusions had most recently been extended in December to the May 31 deadline, with the USTR considering industry comments submitted in January and February. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden announced plans to impose new tariffs on Chinese products, including electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries, but the treatment of bike and e-bike products remained unclear until Friday's announcement.

2024 Shanghai Show: Intense Competition in Domestic Market

Posted date : 2024-05-13 03:40:44

Text & Photos: Daphne Chen

The 2024 China International Bicycle Exhibition (referred to as the Shanghai Show) was grandly held at the May 5th New International Expo Center in Pudong from May 5th to May 8th. Themed "New Track, New Power, New Journey," this year's Shanghai Exhibition further expanded its scale with an exhibition area of 150,000 square meters and approximately 1,500 participating companies, showcasing across 13 halls (compared to 10 halls in 2023). Unlike previous years, this year's event attracted many young attendees, as well as buyers from Central and South America and Southeast Asia.

In the past two years, cycling has become a new trend and social activity, particularly among young people, thanks to the boost from live streaming by internet celebrities. This trend has attracted many young individuals to join the ranks of bicycle buyers. Road bikes, in particular, have seen a surge in sales, with various brands fiercely competing on specifications, equipment, and prices. The competition has become intense, with prices for carbon fiber road bikes equipped with electronic gear systems and internal wiring designs dropping to less than US$2,100.

The global market is experiencing a downturn in sales and economic stagnation due to an excess of bicycle inventory and slow digestion, compounded by factors such as inflation and wars. However, the Chinese market stands out as a shining exception. The domestic demand for bicycles is thriving, with sales growing rapidly. This is especially true for mid-to-high-end sports bicycles and road bikes. Many local manufacturers, who previously relied heavily on exports, have shifted their focus to the domestic market due to a sharp decline in export orders. This shift has intensified competition in the local market.

In addition to domestic Chinese brands aggressively targeting the domestic market, foreign brands are also actively expanding into the Chinese domestic market. Among them, Decathlon made its debut at the Shanghai Exhibition, showcasing its latest high-end bicycle brand, Van Rysel. This brand also sponsors the UCI Pro Team AG2R and participates in this year's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France.

Many industry insiders estimate that this irregular competition may face a reshuffle by the end of this year.

Tern Introduces First Bosch-Powered E-Bikes Into Taiwan Market

Posted date : 2024-05-05 20:56:53

Tern today launched the very first Bosch-powered e-bikes into the Taiwan market. Starting this May, the Tern Vektron and Tern Quick Haul will be available for sale at local bike shops around the island.

“Taiwan is the global epicenter for quality bicycles and the country has come so far in promoting bikes for recreation and transport,” stated Josh Hon, Tern Team Captain. “With a large portion of Tern Team Members calling Taiwan home, it was easy for us to raise our hands when Bosch suggested entering the Taiwan market. Our bikes also make the most sense for dense cities like Taipei where a compact e-bike is easier to ride and store.

While Taiwan excels as a global manufacturing hub for high-quality bicycles, it has also nurtured a vibrant cycling culture, buoyed by significant investments in cycling infrastructure such as bike lanes, dedicated paths, and bike-sharing services. This cultural shift has seen urbanites in Taiwan increasingly embrace cycling for commuting, running errands, and family excursions on weekends. The Tern Vektron and Quick Haul are tailor-designed to excel in these dense urban environments.

The award-winning Vektron folding e-bike stands out with its superior ride and unmatched storage convenience. It folds faster and smaller than most folding bikes in its class, yet delivers an uncompromised ride. The bike can be easily transported in cars, trains, or buses, for exploring Taiwan's scenic landscapes beyond the city. And it’s easily stashed in closets or coat rooms for storage.

The Quick Haul is a mid-tail cargo bike designed to tackle daily needs, whether that’s a school drop-off or the weekly shop. While brawny enough to safely ferry a passenger or handle 150 kg of load, the Quick Haul is still smaller than a standard city bike. The bike also boasts Tern's innovative Vertical Parking feature for simplifying storage in tight spaces—simply roll the bike into an elevator and stow it away in an apartment nook.

Adaptable to ever-changing lifestyles, both e-bikes can be tailored to fit an assortment of needs using Tern's extensive ecosystem of accessories.

2023 Market Data for Bike & E-bike in Germany

Posted date : 2024-04-01 05:49:32

The German bicycle industry association (ZIV) presented its market data for 2023: «Despite the current economic situation, bicycles and e-bikes remain very popular among consumers, » says ZIV CEO, Burkhard Stork.

«We’re delighted that bicycles and e-bikes remain popular with consumers for everyday mobility and recreation, » says Burkhard Stork, CEO of the ZIV, which publishes the figures every year. «With regard to e-bikes as a market and innovation driver, companies from the German bicycle industry are today playing a pioneering role worldwide. ‘Engineered in Germany’ and ‘Made in Europe’ are the guarantors of engineering, design, quality, sustainability and value retention for e-bikes. »

Bicycle production remains consistently high – e-bikes are driving the market

Contrary to expectations and the generally negative consumer climate, bicycle production and sales both once again attained very high levels in 2023 – comparable to the bicycle boom prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Overall, the number of bicycles and e-bikes continued to grow in Germany in 2023 – as in the previous years – to 84 million units (2022: 82.8 million units), with a share of around 11 million e-bikes. In addition to the purchase of new bikes to replace old ones, there is a growing trend toward acquiring a second or third bike – for recreation, sport or transport purposes, for example. According to the ZIV, market saturation therefore still isn’t in sight.

E-bikes are driving the bicycle industry – in almost all product categories. In 2023, more e-bikes were sold in Germany than bicycles for the first time: e-bikes held a 53% share of the market with 2.1 million units sold (2022: 48%) and bicycles a 47% share with 1.9 million units sold (2022: 52%). The high market share of specialist retailers is noteworthy here. It increased by one percentage point to 77% in 2023, while hypermarkets, DIY stores and discount supermarkets continued to lose ground with a market share of 1% (down 1 percentage point).

After the all-time high in bicycle and e-bike production in Germany in 2022, which led to overfilled warehouses last year due to the temporary slump in demand, production levelled off in 2023 to end on a par with the 2020 boom year (2.3 million units) – so a very good level. The German bicycle industry actually harbours even greater potential, as the lion’s share of production takes place abroad on behalf of German companies (90% predominantly in EU countries). Contract manufacturing by German companies abroad totals 710,000 units. Thus, the companies of the German bicycle industry accounted for 3 million bicycles and e-bikes produced in Germany and abroad in 2023.

High sales reflect intrinsic value of products

Sales in the bicycle industry also remained at a consistently high level in 2023: The bicycles and e-bikes sold in Germany in 2023 were worth a total of €7.06 billion (2022: €7.36 billion; 2021: €6.56 billion; 2019: €4 billion). The intrinsic value of products is also reflected in the sales prices. Across all sales channels (specialist retailers, online, hypermarkets, etc.), the industry recorded a gross average sales price of €470 for bicycles (2022: €500) and €2,950 for e-bikes (2022: €2,800) in 2023. The growing proportion of cargo bikes must be borne in mind here. As they are more expensive, they lead to higher average prices.

«Overall, the market data shows very clearly that people in Germany greatly value cycling in everyday life and recreation, along with the associated high-quality products,» says ZIV CEO Burkhard Stork. The bicycle market thus remained at a consistently high level, defying the generally negative consumer climate in 2023. Consumers value bicycles – and especially e-bikes – offering high quality and innovative technology as well as the advice and services provided by qualified specialist retailers and their workshops. Leasing options through employers have also become an important market driver. Experts estimate that around one in four bikes is today provided via a leasing agreement; this offers countless advantages for employees. Particularly stationary specialist retailers are benefitting extensively from this development.

Specialist bicycle retail: VSF sees continued high importance and positive results

The VSF – German Service & Bicycle Association, which represents a significant part of the stationary specialist retail in Germany together with Bike & Co., also sees positive results despite all the difficulties in the market and is optimistic about the current year. «Stationary specialist retail is proving remarkably stable in these turbulent times,» notes VSF Managing Director Uwe Wöll. «The situation in stationary specialist retail is tangibly positive – in terms of total sales, average prices, business expectations and stock levels, for example. Specialist retail thus remains the mainstay of the bicycle industry and the decisive sales channel for high-quality bicycles and e-bikes. »

Outlook: bicycles and e-bikes will remain popular

«The rising mobility, energy, rent and living costs, coupled with a growing environmental and health awareness, are conditions that boost the popularity of bicycles and e-bikes – both now and undoubtedly also in the future. Policymakers mustn’t forget bicycles and must finally fully recognise their potential, » says ZIV CEO Burkhard Stork.

Taiwan's Largest Sports Arena, Taichung Dome, Breaks Ground After 19 Years of Planning

[March 11, 2024 – Taichung, Taiwan] – After a lengthy 19-year process and the oversight of three successive mayors, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Taichung Dome, the city's largest sports arena, took place on March 11th amidst the presence of thousands of spectators and dignitaries. Mayor Lu Shiow-yen expressed her delight at the commencement of construction, emphasizing that the Taichung Dome will fulfill the city's long-standing need for a significant infrastructure venue, capable of meeting development demands for the next century. She expressed her joy at the realization of her campaign promises and aspirations.

Mayor Lu shared a personal note, revealing that the groundbreaking ceremony coincided with her wedding anniversary, stating, "I hope this brings good luck!"

"I have never forgotten my commitment to the citizens – to build a dome for Taichung, for Central Taiwan!" Mayor Lu proclaimed. She stressed the importance of having a grand arena in every great city, where tens of thousands of citizens can comfortably enjoy large-scale performances, entertainment, or sporting events without exposure to the elements. To achieve this vision, Taichung enlisted the renowned Japanese architect, Mr. Kengo Kuma, designer of Japan's Olympic main stadium and one of the world's top architects. The Taichung Dome is slated for completion in 2030 and is expected to mark a significant milestone in aligning the city with international standards.

However, with the sector beginning to align itself with global shifts toward sustainable practices, and promoting healthy lifestyles, it is expected to grow throughout 2024. This year’s TAIPEI CYCLE has already attracted over 3,000 pre-registered international buyers from more than 70 countries, indicating a promising future for industry development and business opportunities.

Today, the TAIPEI CYCLE d&i awards, now in its twelfth year, has announced 47 winning entries across eight countries, with five products receiving the Gold Award and two for the ‘Startup Award’ and ‘Green Prize’. Taichung Bike Week 2023 Set to Showcase Leading Bicycle

Posted date : 2023-09-25 20:12:28

2023 Taichung Bike Week (TBW) will be held this October (10/3–10/6). This year TBW welcomes back the Lin and Tempus hotels as part of the hosting line up. Exhibitions will be held at five major hotels in Taichung: Evergreen Hotel, Splendor Hotel, Tempus Hotel, Lin Hotel, and Lin Wedding Garden. In total, approximately 250 exhibitors will introduce their new OEM products at this year’s event.

Taichung Bike Week is different from all other bicycle trade shows. Spread out over five Taichung hotels, the event is solely for bicycle component brands to introduce their new products to international OEM customers. This B2B business exhibition provides opportunities for the managers of mid- and high-end OE bicycle parts producers and bicycle manufacturers to discuss and negotiate new model specs for the coming year with trading companies and buyers.

TBW once again receives support from the Taichung City Government this year. Taichung City government hopes that its promotion of bicycle industry events and continuing support and assistance to the industry will help domestic and foreign firms make contact with the local bicycle industry, bear witness to Taichung's globalization, and appreciate Taichung's enthusiasm for bicycles and bicycle friendliness. The official TBW information counter will be located on the 7th Floor of the Lin Hotel. Visitors are welcome to come and get free copies of TBW Show Daily and the buyers’ guide (TBS & EBS).

Taichung City Government authorizes Wheel Giant as the only official TBW Show Daily publisher. Without approval, it’s not allowed to use the Taichung Bike Week logo. Deadlines for companies wishing to place advertisements or submit new product introductions for inclusion in the official TBW Show Daily magazines are fast approaching. The deadline for ordering Show Daily advertising space is September 25th, while the final deadline for submitting new product introductions is September 26th. Please email Wheel Giant for further details at rep@mail.wheelgiant.com.tw

2024 Taichung Bike Week will be held from September 24 to 27.

All Eyes are on 2022 Taichung Bike Week

Posted date : 2022-07-13 01:22:38

After being cancelled for two years due to Covid-19, Taichung Bike Week (TBW) will finally be held this September (9/20-9/23). According to organizer Wheel Giant, with the loosening of Covid restrictions around the world, and the gradual easing of entry controls by Taiwan, many domestic and foreign firms hold high expectations for 2022 TBW. We hope that Taiwan can ease its 3+4 entry quarantine policy as soon as possible, which will free bicycle industry people from around the world to gather in Taichung.

The biggest change in this year's TBW is that although exhibitions were held at three hotels—Tempus, Splendor, and Evergreen—in the past, the most senior of the three—the Tempus—had to withdraw this year due to internal problems. The Lin Hotel has recently stated that it would like to host TBW; it can provide space on different floors, and will offer an "early bird discount" to attract participants. The Lin Hotel previously hosted TBW in 2016. The Hotel National, which is located near the Splendor, also will rent out space to TBW exhibitors this year.

Many foreign industry people are taking a wait-and-see attitude, and hope that Taiwan will further ease its entry isolation requirements by the end of July. The current 3+4 policy will certainly deter foreign personnel from coming to Taiwan, and quite a few companies have indicated that they will wait until late July or early August before deciding whether to attend.

2021 Taichung Bike Week Postponed to 2022

Posted date : 2021-08-16 01:24:37

In view of the danger posed by the Covid-19 Delta variant, which has now spread worldwide, Taichung Bike Week (TBW) is once again being postponed in order to help curb the pandemic and maintain people's safety.

To gauge interest in participation among companies that might attend TBW, the three hotels hosting TBW (Splendor Hotel, Evergreen Laurel Hotel, Tempus Hotel) conducted a questionnaire survey at the end of June. The results of this survey, which were announced by co-organizer Wheel Giant, were as follows:

According to the Splendor Hotel, although it had 229 past exhibitors, only 14 were interested in participating this year, and even these firms would not be willing to attend if the show was downsized. The Evergreen Laurel Hotel had 114 past exhibitors, but only 5 were interested in participating this year. The Tempest Hotel had 67 past exhibitors, and only 20 were interested in participating this year. These results led all three hotels to decide that based on epidemic-prevention considerations and the wishes of a majority of exhibiting firms, TBW should not be held this year. Next year's schedule for TBW will be announced after discussion in the near future.

Firms looking for up-to-date information concerning bicycles, parts, e-bikes, and e-bike parts can download the newest version of TBS (2021-2022) e-book and 2021-2022 EBS e-book from the Taichung Bike Week website. If you would like a paper version, you can pick one up free of charge from the Wheel Giant booth FW-109 at Eurobike (9/1-9/3). Or email to rep@mail.wheelgiant.com.tw

TBW Announces Dates for 2021 Event

Posted date : 2020-12-15 23:57:52

Taichung Bike Week Organizers have announced the dates for next year's show. The next edition will be held from September 28~October 1, 2021. Like most bike shows in 2020, this year's TBW was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As usual, TBW will be located at the three Taichung hotels: The Splendor, The Tempus, and The Evergreen next year. Exhibitors with inquiries regarding booth booking, booth fees or other booth related questions should contact the hotels. For queries related to the advertising or editorial reports in TBW Show Guide and Show Daily magazines, exhibitors should contact Wheel Giant via e-mail. 2020 Taichung Bike Week Postponed to 2021

Posted date : 2020-09-25 02:13:48

Due to the pandemic still raging around the world and the impact it has had on all aspects of life, including travel, 2020 Taichung Bike Week will be postponed until September 2021. The decision takes into account that Taiwan continues to implement border controls that make visiting the country, even for work, difficult. Furthermore, parts leader SRAM and other major parts makers decided in August to cancel, postpone or move their product launches. The precise dates for 2021 will be announced in the near future.

According to SRAM Asia GM Bob Chen, because of the virus, the company’s new product launch will be moved from a hotel to SRAM's Taichung factory. FSA held a product launch at the Tempus Hotel Taichung on September 14-15, which attracted personnel from many assembly plants and trading companies in Taiwan. In addition, nine parts brands (KMC, KS, Novatec, SASO, Controltech, Prowheel, Shining Rims, Smanie, Ciclovation) plan to jointly hold a product launch and demo day in Tainan on October 7-8. Some other companies have opted to launch their new products entirely online.

While many industries have been suffering from the impact of the coronavirus, the bicycle industry practically alone has been enjoying excellent performance. As of July of this year, Taiwan's e-bike exports for 2020 totaled 410,000 units, which represented an increase of 21% year over year. These exports had a total value of US$ 523 million, which put them almost on a par with ordinary whole bicycles (US$ 583 million). It is due to, not in spite of, the pandemic that bicycles have been selling briskly around the world, as people seek safe alternatives to public transport. Supply cannot meet demand, and many factories in Taiwan have full order books and production lines operating at full capacity. Giant's order book is full into 2021, and Merida also has full orders until the first half of 2021. In this situation, the delay of part and component deliveries for up to one year, insufficient production capacity, and manpower shortages are the greatest challenges.

Taichung Bike Week: Scam Warning

Posted date : 2020-08-31 20:05:52

Dear TBW Exhibitor,

You may recently have received a letter from a company calling itself International Fairs Directory which claims to be connected Wheel Giant and Taichung Bike Week, and asks exhibitors to check and update their exhibitor information.

This company is in no way connected to either Wheel Giant or Taichung Bike Week, and your company information is not going to be deleted from our database. We do not recommend you visit to the website mentioned in the letter which is trying to charge your company over 1200 euros per year for the next three years to become 'a partner of choice' on its website. A quick internet search of Inter Fairs reveals numerous complaints about this company from exhibitions all over the world.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact Wheel Giant at  rep@mail.wheelgiant.com.tw

Thank you very much for your continued support of Taichung Bike Week. We would like to wish every company prosperous business.

Kind Regards

TBW Team

2020 TBW Scheduling Remains Unchanged

Posted date : 2020-05-12 21:47:47

In response to numerous queries from bicycle industry members, the coordinating team behind Taichung Bike Week (TBW) has announced that they are still currently planning to go ahead with this year's TBW as scheduled from September 22 – 25, 2020.

Numerous bike exhibitions have been canceled or delayed this year due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, Eurobike organizers, announced that this year's Eurobike show in Friedrichshafen will be put back until November 24 – 26, 2020. However, after much discussion with bike industry exhibitors and buyers the parties involved in coordinating TBW have decided that, if appropriate adjustments are made based on the epidemic situation, TBW can be held successfully without a schedule change. The coordinating team has agreed to monitor the global pandemic situation closely and make any further changes as necessary.

If Taichung Bike Week goes ahead as scheduled, it will be the first major bike industry event to take place this year.

Schedule Changes for 2020 TBW

Posted date : 2019-11-08 03:16:27

Organizers of international OEM event, Taiching Bike Week (TBW) have announced that next year's event will be held from September 22 to 25, 2020. The timing change from this year's event, which was held in the middle of October, is due to the development of the annual bicycle speccing schedule.

According to organizers, many exhibitors felt that there were fewer representatives of American brands at this year's event, mainly because they had already been to Taiwan to visit factories and discuss specifications at the end of September.

Another change for next year's TBW, is that after holding a three-day event this year, the 2020 event will last for four days. The extra day was deemed necessary by many exhibitors to successfully conclude all their business meeting.

Organizers hope that the changes to both the show dates and the length of the event will attract even international buyers to come to Taichung and give both visitors and exhibitors sufficient time to negotiate orders and take full advantage of the unique opportunities offered by TBW.

The 2019 Taichung Bike Week was held at the Splendor, Evergreen and Tempus hotels on October 16-18. A total of 407 exhibitors were attracted to participate in the exhibition, using 492 booths. Even though many international bicycle shows have had to face a trend of decline, the overall scale of this year's TBW was 15% higher than last year. The event has become a unique and professional platform for global OEM manufacturers and bicycle parts brands to showcase their latest products to product managers from the international bike industry.

2019 TBW Day 1 News

Posted date : 2019-10-17 06:00:24

On the first day of Taichung bike Week (TBW), the Tempus and Evergreen hotels were flooded with throngs of international buyers, and numerous meetings with exhibiting firms were held. At the Splendor Hotel, which had the greatest number of vendors, buyers were relatively few, however. Nevertheless, many manufacturers stated that their chief European and American buyers were all at TBW, and even some customers who did not attend Eurobike were present at TBW. The most attention-getting products at the show still consisted of e-bike frames, motors, batteries, electrical control systems, oversize tube diameter suspension forks aimed at e-bikes, and parts for gravel bikes. Posters stating that the 2020 TBW would be held October 13-16 had been put up at the Splendor Hotel and Evergreen Hotel, and induced discussion among exhibiting firms. Some persons commented that Cologne's International Motorcycle Fair would be held in early October next year, while others felt that TBW should not be so close to Eurobike, because parts manufacturers need 45 days to make prototypes, and seeing prototypes is what TBW is all about. Some Europeans also felt that mid-October is too late. Responding to inquiries from this publication, Hank Kao, director of the Industrial Development & Investment Promotion Committee of Taichung City (IDIPC) noted that the scheduling of 2020 TBW has not been finalized, and expressed his wish to establish a schedule that the majority can agree after taking a survey of exhibiting firms' and buyers' views.

In order to welcome bicycle industry personnel from around the world to Taichung, the Taichung Municipal Government asked IDIPC and Wheel Giant to host a welcoming banquet at the Lin Hotel on the evening of the first day of TBW. Approximately 200 distinguished guests attended this event, including Taichung city Deputy Mayor Bruce Linghu, TBA Chairman & Merida President Michael Tseng, Giant Global Chief Branding Officer Phoebe Liu, Kenda Group President Yang, Ying-Ming, KMC Group Chairman Robert Wu, Specialized Executive Vice President Bob Margevicius, Pacific Cycle President George Lin, SR Suntour President Daisuke Kobayashi, Bosch ebike Systems Asia Pacific GM David Howard, Bangkok LA Bicycle President Qiuwen Chen, Bafang Co-founder Sunny He, Tektro President Gary Chen, FSA General Director Mark Vandermolen, Brose Senior Vice President Thomas Leicht, JOYTECH President Tate Chen, SRAM Asia GM Bob Chen, Head of Eurobike Stefan Reisinger, TBW Planner & Co-organizer & Wheel Giant President Grace Ruan, and IDIPC Director Hank Kao.

According to Taichung Deputy Mayor Bruce Linghu, Taiwan's bicycle industry plays a pivotal role in global bicycle markets, and Taichung—which is located at the center of Taiwan—possesses an all-inclusive and highly competitive bicycle industry cluster, and is an R&D and manufacturing stronghold for mid-/high-end bicycles. The Taichung city government hopes that TBW will draw domestic and foreign firms to this bicycle industry cluster, and show them Taichung's enthusiasm and support for bicycles. According TBA Chairman Michael Tseng, in the face of the China-US trade war and the European Union's anti-dumping trade barrier, firms in Taiwan will strive to response, make adjustments on the fly, and seek for breakthroughs.

Hank Kao retired from SRAM last year, and has had extensive experience in the bicycle industry has recently been hired by Taichung's mayor to serve as director of IDIPC. Hank Kao also shared some good news: Ground was broken for Taichung's new Shuinan International Convention Exhibition Center on March 23 of this year, and the first phase of construction is expected to be completed within two years. When completed, the Exhibition Center will accommodate 3,000 booths. The second phase is scheduled to be completed in 2023, and will boost the total number of booths to 5,000. When the time comes, we are certain that Taiwan's chief bicycle show can be held in Taichung, and the large number of firms in the industry will no longer have to travel to Taipei, which will save them much travel expenses.

TBW Returns to Double-Digit Growth

Posted date : 2019-10-15 19:46:33

Geared to mid-/high-end OEM parts manufacturers and complete bicycle firms, 2019 Taichung Bike Week (TBW), is being held from October 16-18 at the Splendor, Evergreen Laurel and Tempus hotels in Taichung. Over the past decade TBW has grown to become a major annual OEM event for the global bicycle industry. As a result of this event, whenever people in the cycle industry think of bicycles, they think of Taichung. TBW also highlights Taichung city government's continuing efforts to boost the industry's growth and global sales expansion.

The event caters to trading companies and product managers at mid-/high-end OEM parts manufacturers and complete bicycle firms, and provides companies with a B2B trade show platform for consultation concerning new bicycle specifications. This year's Taichung Bike Week is expected to be 15% larger than last year's, with 407 manufacturers introducing their latest products in over 492 booths at Taichung's Evergreen, Splendor and Tempus hotels. 100 companies are located in 111 booths at the Evergreen Hotel, 229 companies in 291 booths at the Splendor Hotel and 78 companies occupy 90 booths at the Tempus Hotel.  The focus of this year's show will be on e-mobility products, service and gravel bikes.

Taichung Bike Week receives significant support from Taichung City Government. We are very grateful to newly-elected Taichung Mayor, Lu Shiow-yen, and Taichung city officials for their continued support for, and commitment to, TBW and the global bicycle industry. In addition to TBW information services, the city government is hosting a welcome party with a Chinese-style dinner on the first day of the show. Taichung city government's hopes that its promotion of bicycle industry events and continuing support and assistance to the industry will help domestic and foreign firms to make contact with the local bicycle industry, bear witness to Taichung's globalization and appreciate Taichung's enthusiasm for bicycles and bicycle-friendliness.

Taiwan's bicycle industry plays a pivotal role in the global market. Located near the center of Taiwan, Taichung boasts an extensive and highly-competitive bicycle industry cluster, and is a global R&D and manufacturing stronghold for mid-/high-end bicycles. Apart from possessing a strong bicycle industry foundation, highly attractive bike paths, and the convenient iBike public bicycle system, Taichung has also been striving to improve its bike routes and establish "bike stations" offering parking, recreation, and supply services. The city is continuously upgrading its bicycle hardware and software, and hopes to become a livable, low-carbon energy, cycling-friendly city.

Theparty will be held in the Banquet Room on the 27th floor of theLandis Taichung on the evening of September 26th, 2018 (Wednesday).Due to limited space, TBW exhibitors or visitors wishing to attend shouldregister for places on the official TBW website from August 29.

After several years of continuous doubledigit growth, 2018 marks the first year the the event is likely to decrease insize. This year's event is focusing on the original three hotels—The Splendor,Tempus and Evergreen, with The Lin hotel no longer taking part. In total, approximately460 booths have been  booked so far, adecrease of 10% compared to last year.

The downturn in booth registration is inpart due to the conflicting dates with Taipei International Cycle Show. 2018 isthe first year that the Taipei show is being held in October instead of March, and many exhibitors are finding that they don't have either the manpower orbudgets to exhibit at two side-by-side shows in Taiwan. This situation isfurther exacerbated by the downturn in the global bicycle market.

However, the venue hotels have said thatsince Eurobike, booth and room registration has increased significantly.Additionally, with the announcement that the 2019 Taipei Cycle Show will beheld in March, many international buyers have responded that they will attendonly TBW this year, and then the Taipei Exhibition in March next year.

Other changes for 2108 include adisagreement between the members of the Ride On group. This year, Ride Onbrands will not exhibit collectively in The Millennium Hotel Taichung. Instead, many brands have opted to exhibit in the Tempus, Splendorand Evergreen hotels.

2018 Taichung Bike Week to be Held September 26–28

After discussion between Taichung City government and the Taiwan Bicycle Association, and considering the opinions of companies in the industry, it was finally announced today that the 2018 Taichung Bike Week would be shortened to 3 days and be held September 26–28, 2018.

Taichung Bike Week is intended to be B2B business exhibition providing opportunities for the managers of mid-/high-end parts bicycle OEM producers and whole bicycle manufacturers to discuss and negotiate new model specs for the coming year with trading companies and buyers. Because the time meets the needs of European and American branded firms wishing to determine OEM specifications, and central Taiwan is where most parts and accessories manufacturers in Taiwan are located, Taichung Bike Week has grown steadily in size. And because of the convenient location, after discussions at one of the hotels, buyers can immediately go to suppliers' factories for a tour and to hash out the details of purchases.

With the shift in the timing of the 2018  to 10/31-11/3, Taipei Show will be very close in time to Taichung Bike Week, causing headaches for buyers. The positioning of the two events is very different, however, and numerous foreign buyers indicated that they would only exhibit at or visit Taichung Bike Week. Furthermore, since it is relatively inexpensive to exhibit at Taichung Bike Week, many Taiwanese manufacturers indicated that they would exhibit at both shows in 2018, and let their results guide their decision about which show to participate in during 2019. TBW Records New High, TBW Not Merging with Taipei Cycle Show

Posted date : 2016-10-24 18:02:11

Once again TBW has proven an outstanding success for everyone. 488 exhibitors gave new OE product introductions to visitors from all over the world. The addition of the Lin Hotel, meant that this year we had five 5-star hotels accommodating TBW and grew by 15%. Exhibitor usage of booths varied from the super sleek presentations at in the Ride On group to the free beer booth from Duro Tyres.

Show Organizer and Pro-Lite CEO, Steve Fenton commented “I recall in 2004 when we started to get a group of us together being asked to get more exhibitors together and see if we can create a mini exhibition. This was so easy to do because the show in Taipei was now far too late for OEM product sellers and also for bicycle product managers. In no time at all we had taken over two hotels from top to bottom and we were soon adding a third venue that allowed us to add 300 more exhibitors. It makes me so proud when people come up to me in the street to say thank you for the event and how much they appreciate the effectiveness of our format to that of an exhibition center. Not to mention the costs savings and the most important fact that because of the timing a lot of business gets done.”

TBW is an event run by the industry for the industry. No one gets paid to run this event. I and the rest of the team dedicate our time to making sure the event meets the industry’s needs.

Our goal moving forward is to continue to look and listen to what the visitors and exhibitors want. So with this in mind we are today announcing that in 2017 the dates of the event will be held between October 17, 2017 and October 20, 2017.

This factor is very important because it means that exhibitors don’t have to think too hard when comparing the cost of being at TBW to being in an exhibition center. Steve Fenton stressed. “My company spends on TBW only 3% of what it costs to be at Taipei cycle show. Not only that, we do real business, and in privacy. At exhibition center venues you say hello to people you talk to almost every week. That’s a very expensive way of saying hello.”

TBW is also based right at the very heart of the Taiwan bike industry, with 80% of Taiwanese are within 40 minutes drive of the city. After TBW, many buyers choose to visit their customers nearby. Indeed it was the visits of bike industry buyers that led to the birth of TBW.

There is right now a lot of talk within the industry on why Taipei Cycle Show wants to move its dates to one week after TBW. For TBW we understand our focus is OEM and that we will continue to do the best we can to cater for OEM. At no stage do we plan to merge with Taipei cycle show. The whole concept of TBW is to keep costs down and do business. Merging of the two shows make no commercial sense whatsoever, all it will do is inflate the cost of doing business.

Creating a Healthy, Sustainable, Exercise-loving City

Posted date : 2016-10-20 09:19:40

Taichung, Taiwan, 10/18/2016 -Taichung possesses mountains, rivers, and robust bicycle and sports equipment industry clusters. The city also offers a convenient system of bike routes and the iBike bicycle rental system, as well as a full infrastructure for recreational travel, industrial and transportation. As a result, Taichung has the wherewithal for development into a healthy, sustainable, exercise-loving city and a bicycle travel hotspot.

Apart from its existing Coastal Bikeway, Tanya Shen Green Bikeway, Dongfeng Bikeway, Houfeng Bikeway, Hanxi Riverside Bikeway, and Gaomei Wetlands Bikeway; the city's Dajia-Houli, Dajia-Rinan, Houli-Wufeng, Fengyuan Boulevard, Huanhe and Wufeng Wuxi bike routes will be completed by 2020 or sooner. In addition, the cities and counties of Taichung, Changhua, Nantou, and Miaoli are also working hard to complete a network of bike routes. Taichung further plans to hold the East Asian Youth Games in 2019, and has obtained the right to host the Games' cycling competition. We hope that when global tourists think about cycling, they will think about Taiwan first.

The bicycle industry—which can definitely be considered a green energy industry, has consistently been able to wrest growth from adverse conditions during global economic recessions. The success of Taiwan's bicycle industry in international markets is known to all, and Taiwan has become the world's center of high-end bicycle R&D and manufacturing. Because of this, Taichung Bike Week (TBW) is held by the industry in October each year to showcase the high-end bicycle and parts made by OEM suppliers, and also provide a forum through key industry figures and product managers. This grand event has won the attention of the global bicycle industry, and has been growing steadily in size and importance. Taichung City Government began organizing accompanying services for visiting industry personnel seven years ago, and its support has earned praise from domestic and foreign cycle companies. As a result, bike industry members—both from Taiwan and abroad, think of Taichung when they think of bicycles in Taiwan. TBW has also become one of the city's major annual events.

Thanks to steadfast teamwork on the part of the Taichung City Government and everyone in the industry, TBW has grown in size by double digits on an annual basis. In the past, the number of display venues and lodging space in hotels was insufficient to meet demand, and many firms had to settle for being on the waiting list. This year, however, the 2016 event will also include the Lin Hotel, as well as the original Splendor, Evergreen, Tempus, and Millennium hotels. The number of exhibiting firms this year will surpass 480, representing 15% growth compared to last year and setting an all-time record. We expect this year's TBW to attract more than 5,000 domestic and foreign buyers to view products and discuss the next model-year's specifications, We hope the 2016 TBW is a rousing success, and wish the bicycle industry a prosperous coming year!

Taichung Bike Week is different from all other bicycle trade shows. Spread out over four Taichung hotels—The Tempus, The Evergreen, The Splendor and the Millennium Vee, the event is solely for bicycle component brands to introduce their new products to international OEM customers. The event attracts—and is only open, to bicycle product managers and local suppliers from all over the world. The private and more informal format of TBW allows for the bike industry to conduct the business which will decide designs of future bicycles with unprecedented efficiency.

Taichung is the natural choice of location for such an event. For decades, Taiwanese companies have been at the center of bicycle production for nearly all the world's major bike markets, and 60% of all Taiwanese bike products are manufactured in central region surrounding Taichung. For many years, product managers from around the globe having been coming to Taichung regularly in order to meet with suppliers, and decide their next bicycle specifications. Indeed, TBW has its roots from enterprising sales representatives renting rooms to display their company's products in the hotel where many of the product mangers stayed when they came to Taichung.

Over the past six years, the event has seen phenomenal growth from these roots with a handful of participating brands. This year over 480 brands are exhibiting at the four hotels—approximately in The Tempus, 103 in The Evergreen, 10 in The Millennium Vee, 255 in The Splendor and 55 in The Lin. Although the format of the show precludes accurate gathering of visitor numbers, this year, approximately 5000 bike industry visitors are expected to congregate on Taichung for the show.

At the Millenium Vee Hotel, brands participating in 'Ride On' will give English product presentations to international visitors. Additionally, on October 18, 'Ride On' will hold a ' Taiwan Day' at the Nan Shan Center, where participating brands will present their products in Chinese for Taiwanese and Chinese assemblers and producers.

TBW is strongly supported by the Taichung City Government, which along with logistical support, are also hosting a welcome dinner for exhibitors and visitors in the evening after the second day of the show (October 19). Taichung City Mayor, Lin Chia Long, is determined to promote both the bike industry and cycling culture within the city. The Mayor has established the 'Bicycle 369 Project', in which the "3" is for the establishment of 300 iBike rental stations by the end of 2017, the "6" is for the development of bike paths with a total length of 600 km, and the "9" means the provision of more than 9,000 iBikes—the city's public bike-sharing scheme.
